A planning guide

Planning for a daycare waitlist

Questions to ask before paying a waitlist fee or arranging a start date.

Start with the date you need care

Ask providers whether they expect a place for your child’s age and start date. A waitlist position alone does not guarantee an opening. Ask when they can confirm, how they contact families, and how long you have to respond.

Check the provider’s license and inspection information through your state. Availability, location, hours and a safe care setting all matter alongside the price.

Understand the commitment

Ask whether the waitlist fee is refundable, whether a later deposit is separate, and whether joining requires any future tuition commitment. Save the answers with the provider’s written policy.

If you join several lists, keep a simple record of dates, fees and follow-ups. Avoid paying a fee solely because a projected county price fits your budget.

Budget for the gap

Consider a temporary care arrangement, adjusted work hours, paid leave and help from trusted family if your opening and return-to-work dates do not line up. Enter the costs you can actually confirm in your budget.
